Red Dot Rant 🔴

This is a rant about UI-Design.

Since yesterday’s patch, I feel personally offended by a red dot. This is silly and I know it.

I greatly appreciate aesthetically pleasing and consistent looking interfaces. I value the principle of form follows function. And, apart from some later design choices like the laggy-as-hell industry window and the skill-queue, Eve generally does a good job at that.

For me, this little red dot is a breaking element in an otherwise very fitting design language of our functionally and customizable tables that are the Eve-UI. I know it’s meant to cause attention. But does it really need to be as disturbing as that?

When I first saw those graphically lowest-effort-possible dots in screenshots from the test-server, I thought it would be just for testing purposes. Surely, nobody would ignorantly butcher a decades-old and thought out design language with a red shapelessness like that.

I was wrong. 🔴

Sure, it is supposed to catch your attention. And it does that. But not in a good way. It looks like someone opened Microsoft Paint, selected a pen, set the color to #FF0000, aimed and casually committed a crime against good taste.

why

A german YouTuber comes to my mind who made a video series about World of Warcraft years ago. He made a great persiflage of the bad design choices and useless abilities some of the classes had at the time.
He came up with the theory that there must be this one developer at Blizzard that feels nothing but pure hate for the players. So he would find the most sadistic ways to annoy and terrorize them.
To give this evil incarnation a name, he called him Malte. Things like this make me believe in the existence of some CCP_Malte as well.

What I could have gotten behind is, for example, a slight highlighting of the background. Kind of like selected items but with different shading. Just something that fits the color scheme of the UI. And maybe a slight highlight of the column where the items were added to.

But this looks just like the lowest effort, cheapest and most unmotivated solution possible. This is not design. This bloody offensive.

*Angry Noises*

To top this madness there is also a sound effect playing! I’m so pissed, I HAVE TO WRITE IN CAPS NOW.

A fellow player reported the whole combination of red dot and sound playing happens every time you recall your Scanner Probes as well. BECAUSE YOU NEED TO BE REMINDED THAT YOU HAVE A NEW ITEM IN YOUR CARGO. How unexpected. My probes actually came back when I told them to…

SERIOUSLY.

REMEMBER THE TIME CCP_MALTE CONVINCED EVERYONE IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO ADD THE DONGGGG! SOUND EVERY TIME YOU WOULD KILL SOMETHING YOU HAD TARGETED?!

THE RED DOT IS JUST LOOKING HORRIBLE IN AN OTHERWISE NICE UI – BUT ADDING A SOUND EFFECT JUST MAKES ME WANT TO PUNCH SOMETHING VERY, VERY HARD.

I DO NOT NEED TO GET REMINDED THAT I HAVE JUST CLICKED THE <LOOT ALL> BUTTON.

I. KNOW. THAT.

Apparently, I’m not the only one angry at this feature.
A selection. 🔴

When you know that there exists a real Red Dot Award recognizing actually good design… The irony makes it almost funny. Almost. 🔴

CCPLS

Sometimes you really make it seem like the majority of CCPers literally never play the game. CCPLS, you are free to let CCP_Malte do his bullshit, but at least give your players the options to turn it off.

UPDATE 21.02.2020: As mentioned in the latest episode of EVE Pulse, the red dot is going away again soon™.

Update: 20.11.2020: The thing is still in the client. I still can not turn it off. ☹

  1. Didn’t think this was a big issue until last night when I spent time running multiple quick missions – unbelievably annoying.

  2. I haven’t logged in to see the red dot yet, but I have yet to see anything favorable about this change or the sound effect that goes with it.

Also, nice work on the red dot in the title, which came through the RSS feed correctly so it appears on the side bar of my blog!

    1. Thanks, Wilhelm. The red dot looks a little bit weird in italic, but I can just claim it’s a design choice… Hehe.
When I checked tonight it was gone as well. At least I could not make it show up anymore which I tried to get a bigger feature-image.

  3. CCP_Malte: “Don’t you guys have smartphones?”
We are used to red dots with numbers in it each time we get a new mail, “missed” call, message, like, updates, … on our smartphones, tablets & co. Most of the times there’s even a sound and/or vibration (ok, at least we can turn that off).
Even my car signals to me with a red flashing light and never ending beeping that a new passenger has entered and isn’t using his seatbelt yet.

Given the omnipresence of red dots signaling something new in our day-to-day life I can see why CCP design team considered it to be a good idea.
Just wait for dramatic music playing full volume (overriding your audio settings) and big red flashing arrows pointing towards the NES icon each time they release a new SKIN, clothing, PLEX or have something on discount.

    1. The red dot feels a bit like when you casually stroll through Skyrim and suddenly the overly dramatic combat music starts playing. You look around the skies to find the deadly dragon to avoid its fiery breath – when you hear the sound of thinly legs over cobblestone followed by the screech of a mud crab. The red dot & ping just come up in too many situations where it adds zero benefits for the player. It’s just distracting.

The thought about mobile phones and apps is a good one, it seems likely the idea comes from there. But as you have mentioned: Those we can turn off if we want for apps we don’t see as important. I would have no complaints at all if we had that option here.
